A BOILING HOT PUMPKIN SOUP STORY

A few years ago, on Halloween I decided to treat my friends with a pumpkin soup baked directly inside the pumpkin.

The hardest part was to cut off its crown. Quite understandable, for as the saying goes, uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.
Afterwards, I just had to follow the instructions step by step.
The recipe was rated " as easy as ABC ", so no need to worry. Well, on second thought I hoped it would be " easier than a pie ", cause for poor cooks like me, making a pie is anything but easy!

Anyway, once my pumpkin in the oven, I could get ready for my guests quietly.
When it was time to put my creamy soup out of the oven, I pulled the oven door, once, twice, three times in vain! It did not open!!
Suddenly I caught sight of a red light flashing on and on.

A look at the user manual was enough to send shivers along my spine!
Jeez, instead of setting the thermostat, I had selected the self-cleaning function, which meant the oven was locked for one hour!!

I had to face the facts : the situation was serious. No kidding, I was in the soup!!

No time to wallow in self-pity, my guests were ringing at the door.
The sound reminded me of the title of a novel by Hemingway " For whom the bell tolls ".

I opened the door, and said :

" Welcome to our Halloween party. Why not start with a trick? I have ruined the first course. Now for the treats, don't be scared, the main course and the dessert aren't home-made! "

The tone was set, and in spite of the poor pumpkin turning into Joan of Arc in the oven, we had fun.

That's all for today, my sweet pumpkins!

HOW TO LOOK LIKE A DO-IT-YOURSELF PRO

Some years ago, when we bought our house, it needed doing up.
While waiting for the craftsmen's estimates (I should say ' hoping for ' their estimates), we thought there were things we could do ourselves.

We were looking forward to farewelling the kitchen tiled floor. It was old-fashioned, cracked and stained, so removing it would be our first step into the handymen's world.

We didn't leave anything up to chance.
After raiding the nearby DIY shop, we came back home with the tiler's perfect outfit : thick overalls, kneepads, heavy duty gloves, safety goggles, and even earplugs (a pneumatic drill music has nothing to do with a lullaby !).
We had bought and rented so many tools that the kitchen quickly looked like a hardware store !

An umpteenth glance at the video " How to remove the tile like a pro ", and we launched the scraping, chipping and drilling challenge .

A couple of hours later, we were washed out, sore all over, dust-covered , and our white tongues proved that our dust masks were not good value for money !

To crown it all, we were awfully thirsty, and as we were not living in the house yet, no drink to be found in the cupboards ! The previous owners had just left cobwebs, and as if to taunt us, an empty bottle-rack !

It was nearly 7pm, so if we wanted to quench our thirst, we had to rush downtown. So, we hopped into our car and off we went !

In the provinces when the shops close at 7, it means the shop assistants are outside at 7, and it's no use shaking the door.
We were left high and dry.

Before withering for ever, the only thing to be done was to pay a visit to the local pub.
I'm not that keen on beer, but asking for still water or ice tea in that place would be a bit cheeky, so I thought draught beer would do.

As soon as we stepped in, the bartender shouted :

" Welcome to Mardi Gras party , and, please, a storm of applause for our couple of craftsmen ! Thanks for coming ! In half-an-hour the best costume will be awarded a beertender ! In the meantime have fun  and enjoy your beer ! ".

The place had a soft lighting, and we could just guess the customers' figures, but sure it was crowded, cause we were cheered loudly !

A bit embarrassed, we ordered our drinks and sat down.
We were sipping our beer, when a customer came to our table and said :

" Congrats ! Dressing up as craftsmen ! What a brainwave ! But, how did you manage for the dust, the cement stains and the goggle marks on your faces ? ".

Before I could say Jack Robinson, Dearhubby who is always quick on the draw, replied :

" You know, it was not that difficult ! We are tilers. We have just started our own business, and tonight we are celebrating our first contract ! ".

I nearly chocked ! Jeez, my favourite prankster was back !

A last gulp of beer, then I stood up, and to show Dearhubby I could be a pranskter myself, I said :

" Sorry, but I have to leave you, cause of urgent estimates to post, but my husband will tell you more about our activities and give you our business card. See you some day ".

Dearhubby looked flabbergasted. I gave him a little wink and left !

For once, in the pranks category, the student had surpassed the master .

IS AGING REALLY A SIGN OF WISDOM?

Some weeks ago, while chewing a bite of apple, I suddenly felt a kind of discomfort in my lower gum. Not a real pain, but prevention is better than cure, and an apple a day doesn't keep the dentist away .
My dentist is a nice and efficient guy, but his surgery is not my number- one hangout.
Yet, as it was Friday, and eveybody knows that raging toothache often occurs at weekends, I made an appointment in emergency.
One hour later, when I came back home and told Dearhubby that the dentist had pulled out a chip of milk tooth abandonned by its siblings  deep inside my jaw ages ago, he exclaimed :

"Hey Perky, you must absolutely post a review about the last anti-aging cream you bought to say it is so efficient that after only two weeks' use  your milk teeth are coming back ! ".

I just rolled my eyes and shrugged my shouders, but before I could say Jack Robinson , he added :

" I'll make some tea. Would you like it in a mug or in a feeding bottle ?
Come on Perky,I'm joking .Make a nice little smile. Let bygones be bygones."

He was right, after all aging is a sign of wisdom, isn't it? So why on earth did my dentist pull my four of wisdom teeth out?😏

A BLINDING SPRING ALLERGY

Every year it is the same old tune : as soon as the first rays of Spring sun try to shine through the windows, my vision gets blurred.
My eyes don't itch  or cry, but it's just as if I was sitting in front of a blurred screen.
Then I know my seasonal allergy is on, and it's high time to stock up sponges, kitchen rolls and bananas.

Yes, guys, sponges, kitchen rolls, and bananas!
That's the best prescription to cure my self-diagnosed  allergy!

Come on, don't laugh! I haven't gone bananas!
Of course, it is not medically-proven, but it works!
Let me walk you through it.

On the early days of Spring, to nip my WCA syndrom in the bud and get rid of my foggy vision, I just have to grab a sponge, a kitchen roll, and a few hours later, the fog clears up and the sunlight gets brighter.
Still here and there some hazy patches and a few streaks, but nothing compared to the dim light I was living in.

That's when bananas come into play.

What have bananas got to do with my WCA syndrom?

Oops, I have forgotten to tell you that, once I hold my sponge and kitchen roll tight, I need to make a lot of S-shaped movements.
Unfortunately, that kind of indoor workout has side effects on my shoulders, elbows and wrists. That's the only snag of my treatment.
Then, there is no better nutritious and healthy snack than a banana to avoid sore muscles after my exercising.

That's all! Sponge, kitchen roll and bananas, and I get rid of my WCA syndrom.

Oh, sorry, you don't know what WCA stands for?
World Clown Association?
Well, I'd like it, but actually WCA is less fun.
It is short for Window Cleaning Allergy, a kind of seasonal disorder, which, after brewing on window and glass doors all throughout the dark days of Winter, suddenly flares up on the very first sunny day of Spring.

If you suffer from that damned allergy, also known as the squeegee allergy, I hope this week's tip will help you to beat it!
Give it a go and don't spare elbow grease !
